On the right a piece I made a few years ago from rusted cotton and rusted yarn on bark cloth. Last week I worked up the courage to cut it up into strips and alter it. I used Jude Hill's method of woven patchwork. This meant I lost some of the stitching but managed to save some odd woven bits to use for cards.
I have consolidated the piece by adding new stitching. New piece on the left, I will try and get a better photo sometime. this piece will be framed.

This is from another piece I am cutting up. This is complete as it is and will also be framed, I will then use the rest of the original for another piece.
Detail of another piece I have just finished which is made up from old denim pieces I have kept over the years. It is a wall piece or throw.
At the moment I am into stitching I am sure I will be weaving again soon so will update on the branch piece soon. Not the best photos but the weather has been very dull.
Debbie! I believe you can make art from anything! I just discarded some rust dyed fabrics I didn't know what to do with. Maybe I can resurrect them as the trash hasn't been picked up yet. Maybe I should send them to you! And the denim...there's a lot of that being tossed out in old jeans here. I guess imagination is what I need. Did you hand stitch those pieces together? Would love to see a photo of the entire finished piece.
ReplyDeleteForgot I hadn't replied to your comment. I certainly can't make art from anything but I am into more experimentation these days. I am sure you could find something to do with rusty pieces using some of your line drawings or altered photos. The denim piece is machine stitched it was fun trying to get all the pieces working together, when I can find somewhere to hang it up I will take a photo of the whole piece.

Thanks Grace, its a bit scary cutting something up, the first time I did it was on a course with India Flint, we had stitched all our dyed pieces together and then she encouraged us to cut it up and remake. The resulting pieces often work out better than the original.
